Early Life and Education
Genoveva was raised in Enugu, where she attended Command Children's School for her primary education. She continued her studies at Command Day Secondary School until 2006 when her family relocated to the United Kingdom. In London, she completed her secondary education at St. Mary's College of Education High School. It was during these formative years in London that Umeh discovered her love for acting.
While attending high school, she enrolled in the Identity School of Acting, a part-time drama school in the UK, where she nurtured her budding passion for performance. Even while enjoying the stage, Umeh continued to pursue an academic path, obtaining a law degree (LLB) from the University of Surrey, where she graduated with honors. Despite her academic success, acting was the path she truly desired.
Career Beginnings in Lagos
In 2018, Genoveva took a bold step by relocating to Lagos, Nigeria, to chase her dream of becoming an actress. Her initial days in Lagos were filled with challenges as she had to adapt to life in Nigeria's vibrant and fast-paced film industry. She began her journey with stage performances, including writing and performing a one-woman stage play titled HOME, which was showcased at the Lagos Fringe Festival and later in South Africa. Another notable stage performance came when she starred in High, a play that addressed substance abuse among teenagers.
Her first major screen role came in the film A Tune Away (2020), which earned her a nomination for Best Actress at the 2022 Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards (AMVCA). This was a pivotal moment in her career, setting the stage for greater opportunities.
Breakthrough and Acclaim
Genoveva’s rise to prominence came when she starred as Timeyin Ademola in Blood Sisters, Nigeria's first Netflix original crime thriller series, which brought her international recognition. Her portrayal of the complex character earned her widespread acclaim and solidified her place as one of Nollywood's brightest new stars.
She quickly followed this success with a lead role in Far From Home, a popular young adult series on Netflix, where she played Zina, a character with whom she shared some personal traits. Her ability to embody diverse characters won her both audience and critical acclaim.
In 2024, Umeh took home the Best Supporting Actress award at the AMVCAs for her role in Breath of Life, a Prime Video original. This award was a testament to her skill and growing influence in the industry. Additionally, she appeared in Crime and Justice Lagos, where she played a significant role in the Showmax original drama series.
