Jim Ovia spent his formative years in Nigeria, receiving his primary and secondary school education at Ika Grammar School in BojiBoji-Owa, Agbor, Delta State, before going abroad for his higher education. He earned a B.Sc. degree in Business Administration from Southern University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA, in 1977, and later completed his master's degree in Business Administration from the University of Louisiana, Monroe, USA, in 1979. His commitment to lifelong learning also led him to become an alumnus of Harvard Business School.

In 1973, he commenced his professional journey as a clerk at Barclays Bank, now known as Union Bank. By 1983, Ovia had risen to the position of Senior Manager at International Merchant Bank, where he served as a Financial Analyst under the umbrella of an agreement with First National Bank of Chicago. Between 1987 and 1990, he played a pivotal role as the head of the Corporate Finance Department at the Merchant Bank of Africa, working closely with technical supervision from Bank of America. In addition to his banking roles, Ovia also contributed as a part-time computer operator at Baton Rouge Bank and Trust Company.

Armed with this extensive background, encompassing roles in various banks and departments, Jim Ovia possessed the knowledge, expertise, and valuable connections necessary to embark on the journey of starting and successfully developing his own bank. In 1990, Ovia founded Zenith Bank, which swiftly rose to prominence, becoming one of Nigeria's most profitable financial institutions. Under his leadership, the bank achieved significant milestones, including a $850 million GDR listing on the London Stock Exchange in 2013 and a $500 million Eurobond issuance in 2017.

Additionally, he is the Proprietor of the University of Information and Communication Technology in Delta State.
